# AI citation An AI citation is a link an assistant shows as the source of a statement in its answer. This page shows what that means for your small site. You will learn where they come from, how to qualify, and how to read the clicks. Each is a normal link to a page. It appears where the model grounds a claim in your content. Your domain name is visible. Users can click straight to your page. ## Where citations come from and what a page needs Assistants cite pages they retrieved from their index for the question. They favour pages that answer the question directly, with clear headings, lists, tables and dates, on sites the index already ranks. You cannot submit or buy a citation. You earn it by being the best source for that query. Write the specific page the question deserves. - Match the question in the h1. For example: “What is usage based pricing?” on /guides/usage-based-pricing. - Answer in the first paragraph. Keep it factual, in your words. - Use scannable structure. Short sections, bullet lists, a small table where it helps. - Show a date on the page. Update when facts change. - Add a concise summary box with the key facts the model can lift. ## How clicks from AI citations arrive and how to measure them Clicks from citations arrive with the assistant’s referrer, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. For Google, they arrive as ordinary search clicks. 1. **Check analytics referral reports** Filter by referrer contains chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, bing.com or duckduckgo.com for Copilot, and by anthropic.com or claude.ai for Claude, as of 2026. 2. **Segment landing pages** List which URLs receive these referrals. Note the queries you target on each page. 3. **Review Search Console for Google traffic** Open Performance. Filter by page. Ship the best answer you can stand behind for a query you serve. - Thin roundups rarely get cited. Depth wins. - Vague headings hide your answer from the indexer. State the claim plainly. - No date signals stale content. Add a machine readable and human visible date. - Blocking AI crawlers kills retrieval.
