# Ranking

Ranking is your page’s position in Google’s results for one query, in one country, on one device, at one moment. This page explains what that means for a small site. You will learn how to read it, act on it and avoid the traps.

## What ranking means

A ranking is your page’s position for a specific search. Position 1 is the first organic result. That is all it measures.

Rankings differ by location, language, device and the searcher’s history. They also move daily. One manual search is a snapshot, not a measurement.

For a small site, a ranking is useful only when it ties to pages that drive signups or sales. Track your key pages: "/", "/pricing", "/guides/getting-started".

## Why rankings vary

Search intent shifts by country and device. "invoices app" on mobile in the UK is a different set of results than in the US on desktop.

Personalisation and freshness move results. A returning searcher may see your site higher. A new article can temporarily lift or displace pages.

> Do not judge ranking with one search in one browser. Use a period of data and compare like for like: same query set, country and device.

## How to measure ranking honestly

Use Search Console for the baseline. It reports the average position of a page or query over a period, which is Google’s own figure.

1. **Pick the scope** Set the country and device you care about. A small site should start with your main market and mobile.
2. **Choose the period** Use 28 days to smooth daily swings. Compare to the previous period only after you ship changes.
3. **Filter to targets** Filter by page: "/pricing" or "/features". Then view the queries for each page to see where it shows.
4. **Read the numbers** Note impressions, clicks, average position and click through rate. Position without impressions is not useful.

Rank trackers record positions on a schedule. They are good for checking specific queries and rivals. Trust Search Console for averages, and use trackers for spot checks and alerts.

## What to do with ranking data

- Find striking distance terms. If "/pricing" averages on the cusp of page one for "yourproduct pricing", improve the title and internal links to push higher.
- Fix intent mismatches. If "/blog/what-is-x" ranks for "x pricing", add a clear link to "/pricing" and update headings so each page matches its query.
- Consolidate overlaps. If two guides sit around the same position for one query, merge them into one strong page and redirect the weaker URL.
- Improve click appeal. If you sit mid page with low click through rate, rework the title and meta description to match the search and promise the value.
- Build supporting links. Add contextual internal links from "/guides/…" to the target page with clear anchor text, for example "pricing plans" to "/pricing".

A fixed page looks like this: "/pricing" moves from the middle of the pack to a visible spot on page one, and clicks rise because it now answers the search and is easier to find on your site.

## Features that take clicks anyway

Ads, AI Overviews and rich snippets can sit above organic results. They take clicks whatever your position, as of 2026.

- If an ad stack fills the top, expect fewer clicks even at position 2.
- If a featured snippet answers the query, target the snippet or refocus to a query with visit intent.
- For navigational searches like "google sheets", you will not win clicks. Target specific tasks instead, for example "import csv into google sheets".

Watch the Search appearance and queries in your reports. If impressions rise but clicks stall, the page may sit under features or miss intent.

## Questions

### How do I check my Google ranking?

Use Search Console’s Performance report. Set your country and device, pick 28 days and read average position for the page or query. A manual Google search is not a measurement.

### What is a good ranking for a small site?

Aim for page one on the few queries that match your signup path. Lower positions can still work if the page earns clicks and converts.

### Why do my rankings change every day?

Results differ by location, device and search history. Google also refreshes results. Look at 28 day averages and compare periods. Do not chase daily swings.

### Why are impressions rising but clicks flat?

You may rank under ads, AI Overviews or a snippet that answers the query. Or the page misses intent. Check the query list, improve titles and target clearer visit intent.

### Should I use a rank tracker?

Yes, to watch specific queries and rivals on a schedule. Use it with, not instead of, Search Console. Trust Search Console for average positions over time.

### Which website is rank 1?

There is no global rank 1. Ranking exists only for a specific query in a country on a device at a moment. Ask instead, which page ranks first for your target query.
