# SERP volatility

SERP volatility is the day-to-day movement of results for a set of queries. Third-party trackers sample tracked queries and publish an index of how much positions moved; Google confirms the large changes on its Search Status Dashboard. Ordinary volatility is constant, which is why one day’s position is not a measurement.

## What moves results on an ordinary day

- Personalisation: your location, your language and your history change what you see.
- Tests: Google runs experiments continuously, so two people in the same city can see different pages.
- Freshness: a query that Google reads as needing recent results reshuffles as new pages appear.
- Rivals: someone else published, refreshed or earned a link today.
- Your own site: a deploy changed a title, a canonical or the speed of a template.

## The weather tools, and what they are worth

Semrush Sensor, Mozcast, Advanced Web Ranking and others track a fixed set of queries and publish a daily index. A high reading suggests Google changed something broadly; it says nothing about your site in particular.

| Signal | What it tells you |
| --- | --- |
| A weather tool is high, you are stable | Nothing to do |
| A weather tool is high, you dropped | Possibly an update. Check the Search Status Dashboard for dates |
| A weather tool is calm, you dropped | Look at your own deploys, your page and the results page for that query |
| You moved one or two places | Noise. Do not act on it |

## When to act, and how

1. **Wait for a week** Compare seven days with the seven before in the Performance report, by page and by query. A single day is weather.
2. **Check the dates against the dashboard** Google announces core and spam updates with start and end dates. A drop that starts on one is a different story from one that starts on your deploy day.
3. **Split demand from position** Impressions falling means fewer searches or fewer showings. Impressions steady with clicks falling means the result itself changed.
4. **Look at the results page** A new feature, an AI overview or a new rival at the top explains more drops than any algorithm theory.

> Average position in Search Console is the mean of your highest position across impressions, so it moves when the mix of queries moves, even if no page changed rank.

## Questions

### Why do my rankings change every day?

Because results are personalised, tested and refreshed constantly, and because rivals publish. Movement of a place or two is normal and is not a signal to act on.

### What are SERP weather tools?

Third-party trackers that sample a fixed set of queries daily and publish an index of how much positions moved. They show that something changed broadly, not what changed for you.

### How do I know if an update hit my site?

Compare the dates of your drop with the Search Status Dashboard, which lists confirmed updates with start and end dates, then check whether the fall is site-wide or on a few pages.

### How long should I wait before reacting to a drop?

At least a week, and longer during a confirmed update rollout, which takes about two weeks. Acting on one day usually means undoing something that was fine.

### Does average position moving mean my page moved?

Not necessarily. Average position is a mean across impressions, so it shifts when the set of queries you appear on changes, even if each page holds its rank.
