## What it is

A top-level domain, or TLD, is the last part of a domain name: .com, .org, .io, .ai, .fr.

Generic TLDs, like .com, .io, .ai and .app, carry no country signal to Google. Country-code TLDs, like .fr, .de and .co.uk, are a strong signal of the country served and cannot be geo-targeted elsewhere.

## Why it matters for a small site

Google has said the TLD itself does not affect ranking. People still trust some endings more than others. A memorable name matters more than the ending.

Pick a generic TLD if you serve many countries from one site. Pick a country-code TLD if you only serve one country and want that market signal baked in.

Exact match domains, like taskmanagementsoftware.com, earned nothing since the 2012 update. Do not expect a keyword in the domain to lift you.

## How to read and measure it

- In Search Console, open Search results and filter by your brand name. Compare click-through rate on your homepage for different countries. If it is low where you sell, the ending might hurt trust.
- Open the Countries tab in Search Console. If you use a country-code TLD, expect most impressions from that country. If you need reach elsewhere, the TLD may be the constraint.
- Track branded searches like "yourproduct" in Search Console. If you rebrand or move TLDs, watch impressions, clicks and average position over 28 days before and after.
- Check support and sales messages. If buyers ask “Do you ship to the US?” on a .fr, the ending may be sending the wrong signal.

A fixed setup looks like yourproduct.com for global SaaS, or yourproduct.fr for a France-only store. Your Search Console countries reflect that choice.

## How to choose a TLD

1. **Decide your market** If you sell in one country only, a country-code TLD is clear. If you sell globally or plan to, choose a generic TLD.
2. **Check memorability** Say the domain out loud. Can someone type it from memory? Prioritise a short, clean name over chasing a specific ending.
3. **Check availability with variants** Look for yourproduct.com and close options. If taken, yourproduct.app or yourproduct.io are fine for tech as of 2026.
4. **Plan for email and print** Avoid confusion like yourproduct.co when yourproduct.com is popular. You will lose emails and type-in traffic.
5. **Lock the canonical** Pick www or non-www, set it once, and redirect the other to it. Keep one canonical host and one TLD in use.

If you must change the TLD later, plan a full site move with 301 redirects and updated sitemaps. Expect a settling period.

> Do not change your TLD for SEO alone. It will not improve rankings.

## Common traps

- Trying to geo-target a country-code TLD to another country. You cannot. Use a generic TLD or a local site per country.
- Buying an exact match domain for a shortcut. It brings no ranking boost since 2012. Focus on content and links.
- Mixing subdomains and TLDs. blog.yourproduct.com is a subdomain on the same TLD, not a separate country site.
- Switching to a novelty ending without a plan. Some users distrust unfamiliar TLDs. Test brand CTR on your name first in Search Console.
- Doing a TLD change without a redirect map. You will lose equity and confuse users.

## Questions

### Does the TLD affect Google rankings?

No. The TLD itself does not affect ranking. Google treats generic TLDs the same. Use a country-code TLD only if you want a country signal baked in.

### What is the best TLD for SEO?

There is no best TLD for rankings. Pick a generic TLD like .com if you serve many countries. Pick a country-code only for a single-country site.

### Are .io and .ai good TLDs for a SaaS?

Yes for branding. They are generic for Google and carry no country signal. What matters more is a short, memorable domain and strong content.

### Should I buy an exact match domain for a keyword?

No for rankings. Exact match domains earned nothing since the 2012 update. If the name is memorable and brandable, you can still use it.

### Can I target the US with a .co.uk domain?

No. A country-code TLD is a strong UK signal and cannot be geo-targeted elsewhere. Use a generic TLD for a global or US-first site.

### How do I change from .io to .com without losing traffic?

Plan a site move. Map every URL, use 301 redirects, update canonicals and sitemaps, and monitor Search Console for coverage and country data.
