# White hat SEO

White hat SEO is search optimisation within the search engines’ guidelines: content that answers queries, a crawlable and fast site, links earned for a reason. The term comes from cowboy films, and, as of 2026, Google instead says a site follows or violates the spam policies. The opposite is black hat, the practices those policies ban.

## What it means and the opposite

White hat means you try to win on relevance, usefulness and access. You do not try to trick the crawler or the user. You accept that rankings move with quality and demand.

- Google’s own wording: a site follows the spam policies or it does not.
- Black hat are the banned tactics: cloaking, doorway pages, hidden text, keyword stuffing, link schemes, scaled content abuse, scraped content, sneaky redirects.

## Why it matters for a small site

You do not have budget to burn on churn. White hat work compounds. Each good page can earn links and mentions and can be updated, not replaced.

You also reduce risk. Spam tactics can trigger a manual action or get hit by a spam update. Recovery takes time you cannot spare.

## How to check you are within the policies

1. **Check for manual actions** Open Search Console, Manual actions. You want to see no issues detected. If you have one, pause link or content pushes and fix the cause first.
2. **Scan your pages for intent match** Pick your top queries in the Performance report. Open the matching pages. Does /pricing answer “product name pricing”? Does /guides/getting-started answer “how to use product name”?
3. **Confirm crawlability and speed** Run Core Web Vitals. Aim for LCP under 2.5 seconds, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200 ms. Ensure no critical page is blocked by robots.txt or noindex.
4. **Review your links** List recent links. Each should exist for a reason: a citation, a review, a directory that users actually visit, or a partner page. No paid link schemes.
5. **Look for scale risks** Do you publish thousands of near-duplicates or scraped pages? That is scaled content abuse. Delete or merge thin sets and keep only useful, distinct pages.

## Techniques that are safely white hat

- Search intent first: title and h1 use the query’s wording, the body answers it directly in the first screen.
- On-page basics: unique title under about 60 characters and a clear meta description. Use descriptive headings and concise URLs.
- Internal linking: link new pages from your navigation and relevant posts. Example: from /blog/compare-tools to /pricing with anchor “pricing”.
- Speed and UX: optimise images, cut third-party scripts, and fix layout shifts. Ship a stable, fast page that loads the main content first.
- Helpful media: screenshots, code samples, or short clips that solve the task. Not stock filler.
- Structured data that fits the page: FAQ on a genuine Q&A block, Product on a product page, Organization on your homepage.
- Links earned for a reason: publish a study, a changelog with real dates, or a comparison with sources that others can cite.

A fixed page looks like this: the query “product name pricing” hits /pricing, which lists plans, limits and FAQs with clear anchors, loads fast, and is linked from the header.

## Common traps and grey areas

- Scaled AI content with light edits. If you would not sign it, do not ship it.
- City or keyword doorway sets like 200 copies of the same page, only the place name changes.
- Expired domains and bulk 301s to pass signals. Build value on your own domain instead.
- Guest posts whose only point is a followed link. That is a link scheme.
- Widgets or footers that drop sitewide followed links on other sites.
- Hidden text and keyword stuffing. If it reads oddly aloud, fix it.
- Cloaking, for example serving different content to Googlebot than to users, or sneaky redirects after the click.

> If you are asking whether a tactic is allowed, assume it is not under the spam policies and choose the user-first option.

## Questions

### What does white hat SEO mean?

It means you follow the search engines’ guidelines. You create helpful content, keep the site crawlable and fast, and earn links for real reasons. You do not use tricks that spam policies ban.

### What is the difference between white hat SEO and black hat SEO?

White hat follows the spam policies. Black hat is the set of practices those policies name, like cloaking, doorway pages, hidden text, keyword stuffing, link schemes, scaled content abuse, scraped content and sneaky redirects.

### Is AI generated content white hat?

It can be if you publish it responsibly. Ship only pages that are accurate, original and useful, with clear editing and intent match. Avoid scaled content abuse and thin rewrites of other sites.

### What are the four types of SEO?

People often group work into technical, on-page, content and off-page. The labels overlap. What matters is that each task helps users and stays within the spam policies.

### Is link building allowed in white hat SEO?

Yes, if the link exists for a reason beyond PageRank. Think citations, reviews, useful directories and partnerships. Avoid paid links, exchanges and any scheme to manipulate links.

### How do I know if I crossed a line?

Check the spam policies and your intent. If the main purpose is to manipulate ranking rather than help users, stop. Also check Search Console for manual actions and fix issues before publishing more.
