SE Ranking alternatives
You picked SE Ranking for value. You are now hitting its edges. This page shows the alternatives that fit a small product team: deeper suites, lighter tools, free options and a report you buy once.

When to look beyond SE Ranking
Stay if you only need weekly ranks, a site audit and basic keyword checks. Move when you need stronger competitive research, bigger link data, or you want to cut software time.
- You chase a rival on “best payroll app” and need their paid and organic history across years.
- Your /guides/getting-started pages lose backlinks and you need reliable link data fast.
- You want a free stack for a small site until revenue grows.
- You prefer a one-off report with findings over yet another subscription.
Deep competitive research: Semrush or Ahrefs
Pick Semrush when you want a broad suite across SEO, advertising and content. It has Keyword Magic Tool, Position Tracking, Site Audit, Backlink Analytics and competitive research, plus advertising and content modules. Its Authority Score is a proprietary metric.
Pick Ahrefs when links and content research drive your plan. It is known for its backlink index and Site Explorer. Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Content Explorer are core. Domain Rating is its 0 to 100 link-based score.
- Chasing rivals on “accounting software for freelancers”: Semrush gives both paid and organic views in one place.
- Auditing a slump on /blog/how-to-invoice: Ahrefs’ Content Explorer and backlinks help you find lost links and new angles.
- Benchmarking your domain: use Authority Score in Semrush or Domain Rating in Ahrefs as relative signals, not goals.
A lighter suite: Mangools for small teams
If SE Ranking feels heavy, Mangools keeps it simple. It has five tools: KWFinder for keyword research with a difficulty score, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher for rank tracking, LinkMiner for backlinks and SiteProfiler. Its backlink data comes from Majestic.
Use it to build a content plan without deep competitor workflows. For example, find lower difficulty terms like “invoice reminder email template” and track the /templates/invoice-reminder page. It is a fit when you publish monthly and want clean basics.
Free stack: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
If you will not pay yet, run on Google Search Console for truth on your clicks and impressions, plus indexing and Core Web Vitals. Add Bing Webmaster Tools for backlinks, keyword research and IndexNow. They are pre-click and free as of 2026.
Verify your site
Add and verify your domain in Google Search Console. Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Fix crawling and indexation
Check Coverage and sitemaps in Search Console. Submit missing URLs. Remove noindex where wrong.
Find quick wins
Open the Performance report. Filter by queries where average position is 11 to 20. Improve titles and internal links to those pages.
Watch field speed
Open Core Web Vitals in Search Console. If LCP is over 2.5 seconds on /pricing, optimise images and render blocking code.
Add Ahrefs Webmaster Tools if verified to crawl and review your own site for free. It gives Site Audit and Site Explorer data for your domain only.
One-off report instead of a subscription
If you open tools once a week and never change pages, a subscription is waste. Buy a report with your site, the searches around it and rivals on them. Act, then repeat when the site changes again.
A good report answers three things. Which pages to fix now for more clicks from “invoice app” and “send invoice by email”. What to publish next that you can rank for. Which links to win that move your /pricing and your money pages.
Do you need a crawler too
SE Ranking audits pages. If you want deeper crawl control, use a desktop crawler. Screaming Frog SEO Spider runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs. The licence unlocks unlimited crawls, custom extraction, scheduling and API connections. It produces tables you interpret yourself.
Sitebulb runs on Windows and macOS with a cloud version. It explains audit hints with priorities and visual crawl maps. Useful when you need to brief a developer on why CLS is high on /checkout or which pages are orphaned.
How to choose fast
Decide by what you ship this quarter. If you publish weekly and pitch to links, use a deep suite. If you post monthly and need basics, use a lighter suite. If you mostly fix, use free tools and a crawler. If you want a plan, buy a report.
| Need | Best fit | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full competitive picture across SEO and ads | Semrush | Broad suite with competitive research and advertising modules | You can spend days inside it, plan your time |
| Link-led content and outreach | Ahrefs | Strong backlink index and Site Explorer, with Content Explorer | Treat DR as relative, not a goal |
| Simple keywording and basic ranks | Mangools | KWFinder and SERPWatcher are easy for small teams | Backlink data comes via Majestic and is smaller than big suites |
| No budget, truth on your own site | Google Search Console + Bing Webmaster Tools | Free pre-click data, indexing and some link and keyword features | No rival data, you stitch insights yourself |
| Action list without a new subscription | A one-off report | Pages to fix, topics to write, links to win, then you ship | You will need Search Console connected to track gains |
Example workflows you can copy
- Semrush: enter rivalsite.com in competitive research. Note paid vs organic overlap on “invoice software”. Build a cluster for /solutions/freelancers and brief ads.
- Ahrefs: open Site Explorer for rivalsite.com. Sort by Best by links. Find decayed posts to update on your blog, like “invoice email subject lines”. Pitch for links where they lost them.
- Mangools: in KWFinder, filter for difficulty you can win. Pick “send invoice email” and plan a /blog/send-invoice-email with examples. Track it in SERPWatcher.
- Search Console: Performance report, filter query contains “invoice”. Find /pricing with position 12 and low CTR. Rewrite the title to include “pricing and plans”. Add two internal links from /blog posts.
- Screaming Frog: crawl your site. Export pages with no title or duplicate H1s. Fix /features/invoices missing a title and add an H1 that matches the query intent.

Questions
Often yes. It covers rank tracking, a site audit, keyword and competitive research, backlinks and on-page checks. Move when you need stronger competitive research, larger link data or you want to cut tool time with a report.
Pick Semrush for a broad view across SEO and advertising with strong competitive research. Pick Ahrefs if link data and content research lead your plan. Both track ranks and audit sites. The choice is your main use case, not a score on a dashboard.
You can for a while. Use Google Search Console for queries, pages, indexing and Core Web Vitals, and Bing Webmaster Tools for backlinks and keyword research. Add Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for your verified site. You will stitch data yourself and you will not get rival research like a suite.
Use them as relative signals only. Ahrefs Domain Rating and Moz Domain Authority run from 0 to 100 and reflect link-based models. They are not Google’s metrics. Track trends against your rivals, not the absolute value.
Buy a one-off report. A good one names pages to fix now, topics to publish next and links to win, with examples like “/pricing title and H1” or “/guides/getting-started section to add”. Then ship and measure in Search Console and analytics.
Not always. Suites catch common issues. A desktop crawler like Screaming Frog or Sitebulb helps when you need custom extraction, visual crawl maps or to debug at speed. They give you exports you can act on or hand to a developer.
