SpyFu alternatives
You want rivals’ keywords, or you need something SpyFu is not built for. This page shows what to use when: same job as SpyFu, traffic estimates, or your own audit. It ends with a simple workflow you can run this week.

What SpyFu is for, and where it stops
SpyFu specialises in competitor research. It shows a domain’s search and paid keyword history over years, and overlap with rivals.
Choose it when your task is: which terms a rival buys on Google Ads, which pages and terms they ranked for, and how that changed across time.
Do not choose it to audit your own site. For a crawl, Core Web Vitals or indexing fixes, use an audit tool or Search Console. Your choice starts with the job to be done.
Semrush vs SpyFu for rival keywords
Pick Semrush when you want a broad suite with strong competitor views and workflow in one place. It adds keyword research, rank tracking and a site audit to the mix, plus advertising and content modules.
- Built for breadth: Keyword Magic Tool, Position Tracking, Site Audit and Backlink Analytics sit next to competitive research.
- Good when you will also track your own ranks and health alongside rival work.
- Authority Score gives you a quick sense of site strength.
Stay with SpyFu if all you need is deep keyword and ad history on a handful of domains. Move to Semrush if you want that plus an all-in-one workflow for your own site.
Ahrefs as a SpyFu alternative
Pick Ahrefs when links and pages drive your work, with strong competitive views. Its Site Explorer is the launch point, backed by a well known backlink index.
- Known for backlink data and Domain Rating, useful context when judging rival pages.
- Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Content Explorer cover the core SEO jobs.
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified sites, handy if you only need to audit and inspect your own site.
Choose Ahrefs over SpyFu if you must pair keyword gaps with link gaps and content ideas in one place. Keep SpyFu if historic paid keywords are your primary lens.
When you really want traffic estimates, not keywords
Use Similarweb when the task is market sizing and channel mix, not which exact keywords a rival ranks for. It estimates visits, sources, geography, audience and engagement across sites, and compares competitors.
There is a limited free version. Similarweb is not a keyword or audit tool for your own site. Pair it with Search Console for the truth about your clicks and impressions.
If you need an audit of your own site
SpyFu is not for crawling your site, fixing broken pages or Core Web Vitals. Use a crawler or a suite’s audit. Then confirm changes in Google Search Console.
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider: a desktop crawler for Windows, macOS and Linux. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs. The licence unlocks unlimited crawls, custom extraction, scheduling and API connections.
- Sitebulb: a desktop crawler for Windows and macOS with a cloud version, with explained audit hints and visual crawl maps.
- Semrush: Site Audit sits with its suite, useful if you already work there.
- Ahrefs: Site Audit and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for verified sites help you cover the basics at no cost.
A fixed page looks like this: yourproduct.com/guides/getting-started returns 200, loads its main content within 2.5 seconds LCP, and has no duplicate versions in the index.
SE Ranking for small teams that want a full suite
Pick SE Ranking when you want rank tracking, a site audit, keyword and competitive research, and backlinks in one interface, and you do not need the largest datasets. It is often chosen as the affordable full suite.
This fits a product site that runs a weekly workflow: check ranks, fix crawl issues, review competitor terms, and update content. It is simpler than stitching three tools together when you are time poor.
A fast workflow to replace SpyFu’s key jobs
List three real rivals by page, not brand
Pick domains that rank on the queries you want. For a pricing page, search “your tool pricing” and copy the top three that are like you, not marketplaces.
Map the keyword gap
In Semrush or Ahrefs, run a keyword gap across your domain and the three rivals. Export the terms where they rank and you do not. Sort by intent and by how your page could satisfy it.
Check traffic reality
Open Similarweb for those rivals to see relative demand across countries and sources. Sense check if the gap list fits the traffic mix you expect.
Pick five pages to win
Choose pages you can ship in a week. Example: add /guides/security-checklist, and expand /pricing FAQs for “your tool pricing plan limits” if those show in the gap.
Ship, then verify in Search Console
Watch the Search Console Performance report for those new URLs. Track impressions and clicks. Adjust titles under about 60 characters and meta descriptions to match intent.
If you want this done query by query against your rivals, with three findings you can ship, Porteur reads your site, the searches around it and rivals from a URL in about thirty seconds, free, and shows three findings whole.
Choose by job, not by logo
| Job | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Historic rival keywords and ads | SpyFu or Semrush | SpyFu is built for keyword and ad history. Semrush adds broader workflows. |
| Keyword gap with link context | Ahrefs | Link data, Domain Rating and Site Explorer help judge how rivals won a term. |
| Market sizing and channel mix | Similarweb | Traffic estimates and comparisons across sites, not a keyword tool. |
| Weekly suite for a small team | SE Ranking | Rank tracking, audit, and research in one place, often chosen as affordable. |
| Crawl and fix your own site | Screaming Frog or Sitebulb | Desktop crawlers that surface issues you fix, then confirm in Search Console. |
Do not overspend to feel safe. A focused stack beats a bloated one when you are shipping features and pages alone. Swap tools when the job changes.
Why impressions rise without clicks when you switch tools
You might add many terms from a new suite and see impressions rise in Search Console. Clicks lag when your pages are thin or the intent is off. Fix the page, not the tool.

Questions
Semrush and Ahrefs are the closest if you want rival keywords. Pick Semrush for a broad suite with audits and tracking. Pick Ahrefs when link and page analysis is central to your work.
Plans and prices change. Check the SpyFu site. Choose by the job you must do this quarter, not by a discount. If you only need a crawl, do not buy a competitor suite.
Google Search Console is free and shows queries, pages, impressions and clicks for your own site. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified sites and covers Site Audit and Site Explorer on your domain. Use both together.
It depends on the job. For historic rival keywords and ads, use SpyFu. For keyword gaps with link context, use Ahrefs. For a rounded suite with audits and tracking, use Semrush. For traffic estimates across sites, use Similarweb.
Only if you need market sizing and channel mix. SpyFu focuses on keywords and ads. Similarweb estimates visits and sources, which helps with planning, not on-page work.
No. Use a crawler like Screaming Frog or Sitebulb, or the audit modules in Semrush or Ahrefs. Verify fixes in Google Search Console.
