The short answer for a small product site
Pick Semrush if you will do broad keyword and competitor research and want one place to keep going. Pick Moz if you want a gentler start and clearer teaching, and you care about DA as a way to talk about links.
If you only need the truth on your own clicks and quick fixes, start with Google Search Console and a desktop crawler. You may not need a suite yet.
What each tool is built for
Semrush is a broad suite. It covers keyword research with Keyword Magic Tool, rank tracking with Position Tracking, a Site Audit, Backlink Analytics and competitive research. It also has advertising and content modules. Its link metric is Authority Score.
Moz is focused on SEO with Moz Pro. You get Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, Site Crawl, Rank Tracking and On-Page Grader. Its Domain Authority, DA, is 0 to 100, relative and logarithmic. Moz has long-standing education and the free MozBar extension. Moz Local serves local businesses.
What you will actually use on a small site
- Finding the right terms: seed keywords around your product, related questions, and gaps with rivals.
- Checking the site is crawlable: fix titles, meta descriptions, canonicals and internal links.
- Seeing where you rank and if a change moved the needle.
- Understanding your link picture enough to plan outreach.
Example: you ship a notes app. In Semrush, use Keyword Magic Tool for “markdown notes”, group variants, map one term per page. In Moz, use Keyword Explorer for intent and difficulty, then plan a simple cluster.
Then run a crawl. In Semrush Site Audit or Moz Site Crawl, fix /pricing with a missing meta description and add internal links from /guides/getting-started. Track “markdown notes app” in your rank tracker and watch new impressions in Search Console.
Keyword and competitor research depth
Semrush goes further for breadth. Keyword Magic Tool is strong for expanding seed terms and related modifiers. Its competitive research helps you profile domains and topics, so you see the gap from day one.
Moz Pro will get you started with Keyword Explorer and keyword lists. It favours clarity and a softer learning curve. If you are new and want fewer switches and fewer knobs, this helps you ship pages sooner.
Worked move: compare yourproduct.com to two rivals. In Semrush, run a keyword gap to find mid-tail terms they rank for and you do not. In Moz, build a list from their top pages in Link Explorer and Keyword Explorer, then pick three queries to target this quarter. Your fixed /guides/shortcuts page should match a single intent and link out to related pages clearly.
Audits, on-page and fixing the site
Both suites crawl your site and flag issues. Semrush has Site Audit. Moz has Site Crawl and On-Page Grader. For a small product, you are fixing thin titles, missing meta descriptions, broken links and weak internal links first.
- Quick pass: fix title length on /pricing to about 60 characters, and write a plain meta description.
- Tidy canonicals: set a single canonical URL for /blog/how-to-export, and remove duplicates.
- Internal links: add 3 links from /blog posts to /guides/getting-started with exact match anchors kept in check.
If you want more control in a crawl, use a desktop crawler. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler for Windows, macOS and Linux. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs. The licence unlocks unlimited crawls, custom extraction, scheduling and API connections. It produces tables you interpret yourself. Sitebulb is a desktop crawler for Windows and macOS with a cloud version, known for explained audit hints with priorities and visual crawl maps.
Rank tracking and reporting
Semrush Position Tracking and Moz Rank Tracking both monitor selected queries. For a small site, pick ten to twenty terms that map to live pages, not vanity phrases. Tie these to Search Console impressions and clicks, which is your truth pre click.
Pick the terms that matter
Choose terms like “markdown notes app”, “note taking shortcuts” and “export markdown notes”, one per mapped page.
Set tracking and cadence
Add them to Position Tracking or Rank Tracking. Check weekly. Watch trends over 28 days in Search Console.
Report by page, not just by term
Group by URL. Report /guides/getting-started with all its terms together and the clicks it wins.

Decision paths by job to be done
- You are writing a comparison section for six rivals: choose Semrush. Use its competitive research to pull shared and unique terms, then plan your /compare/ pages.
- You are new to SEO and need shared language for stakeholders: choose Moz. Use DA to frame link goals carefully and teach the team with MozBar and clear reports.
- You are fixing crawl issues before launch: use a desktop crawler first. Add Semrush or Moz only when you need keyword breadth or reporting.
- You mostly run paid search and want to peek at organic: either tool works. If you need the long paid keyword history, add SpyFu for that view.

Questions
It depends on the job. Semrush is the broad suite for keyword and competitive breadth. Moz is calmer with strong education and DA as a shared language. Ahrefs is known for its backlink index and Site Explorer, with DR as its link-based score, and is a strong choice when deep link research is your main task.
Better for what. For deep links, consider Ahrefs. For lower-cost rank tracking and audits, look at SE Ranking. For technical crawls, use Screaming Frog SEO Spider or Sitebulb. For traffic estimates on any site, Similarweb gives directional numbers, but they are modelled and rough for small sites.
This page compares features and fit for a small site. For corporate details, check the company’s own site and public filings. Your choice should rest on what the tool helps you do now.
Moz has long-standing education and a clear toolset. DA is Moz’s metric, not Google’s, and it is relative and logarithmic. Use Moz for trends and comparisons, not as an absolute judge of a page’s worth.
Not usually. Pick one and pair it with Google Search Console. Add a desktop crawler for audits. You only need both if your team is split between deep keyword breadth work and DA-led reporting, which is rare on a small site.
Yes. Use Google Search Console for your own queries and clicks. Use Ahrefs Webmaster Tools on your own verified site. Crawl with Screaming Frog SEO Spider, which has a free 500 URL limit. Add a suite when you start planning keywords and tracking across quarters.
