Agentic SEO
Agentic SEO is SEO work carried out by AI agents that act, not just report: they read your search data, edit your pages and publish, in a loop, with a person setting the goal and the rules. The difference from an SEO tool is that the tool tells you what is wrong and the agent changes it. For a small site it means one person can get through far more of the work, and make mistakes at the same speed.

Tools that report and agents that act
A classic SEO tool crawls your site or reads your data and gives you a list: missing titles, pages losing clicks, searches you could target. You do the work. An agent takes the same inputs and does the work itself: it opens the page, rewrites the title, runs the build and shows you the change.
The loop is the defining part. An agent reads the data, decides what to change, makes the change, and can read the data again later to see what happened. Model Context Protocol (MCP), introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, is the common way agents connect to data sources such as Search Console, so the agent can ask for the figures it needs instead of waiting for you to paste them.
What it means for a small site
If you build with a coding agent, you already have most of an SEO agent. Give it your Search Console export or a connection to it, access to the repository, and a rules file, and it can work through the list a tool would have given you.
| Hand over | Keep |
|---|---|
| Collecting questions and phrasings from the results page and forums | Choosing which customers and searches matter |
| Drafting titles, descriptions, sections and internal links | Every claim about your product, prices and rivals |
| Finding missing tags, broken links, pages absent from the sitemap | Changes to robots.txt, redirects and noindex |
| Pulling the figures before and after a change | Deciding what a result means and what to do next |
The traps
- Scaled content. An agent can write a hundred pages in an afternoon. Google's scaled content abuse policy applies whatever produced the pages: many pages made mainly to rank, not to help a reader, are spam whether a person or an agent wrote them.
- Invented figures. Asked to fill a comparison or a stat, a model supplies plausible numbers. Tell it to use only the figures in the data it was given, and to say when one is missing.
- No measurement. An agent that edits pages every day, with no dated log of what changed, leaves you unable to tell what helped. Keep changes small, one page at a time, and judge them after four weeks.
Questions
AI SEO is a loose term for any use of AI in search work, including asking a chat assistant for title ideas. Agentic SEO is narrower: the AI acts on your site and data in a loop, rather than answering one question at a time.
Not for being made by an agent. Google judges the pages, not the tool. Its scaled content abuse policy applies whatever produced the pages, so a flood of thin pages is a problem either way, and a well-made page is fine either way.
No. A coding agent with access to your repository, your Search Console data and a written set of rules covers what a small site needs. The guide on SEO AI agents gives a rules file and the loop to run.
Check my site, free
Before an agent touches your pages, get a free check of your site: paste a URL and in about thirty seconds it reads your site, the searches around it and the rivals on them, and shows three findings whole.
