AI Overview
An AI Overview is Google’s generated answer shown above the organic results for some searches. It launched in the US in May 2024 and expanded widely through 2024 and 2025. It cites a handful of pages with links, and the clicks go to those pages.

What an AI Overview is and where it shows up
An AI Overview appears on a subset of searches, mostly questions and informational queries. It sits above the organic results, before the blue links. It summarises the answer and cites a few sources with links.
There is no separate opt out. If a page is eligible for Search, it is eligible for citation. The nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet controls limit what can be quoted from your page.
Google states that cited pages come from its Search results. Ranking on the query, answering it plainly, and being clear near the top of the page matter.
Why it matters for a small site
Searches with an overview tend to send fewer clicks to the organic results below. If your page is not cited, you can rank high and still get fewer visits.
If your page is cited, you can win clicks even if you are not position one. That can be the difference between a new guide working or not.
How to see which searches show an overview
List your target queries
Pull your key questions from Search Console’s Performance report and your content plan. Example: “how to export invoices” or “pricing analytics definition”.
Check live results
Search each query in a logged out browser. Set the location to your target market. Note where an AI Overview appears and which sites are cited.
Record impact candidates
Mark queries where you rank on page one but an overview opens. These are at risk of lower clicks unless you are cited.
Track over time
Recheck the same queries weekly. Overviews change by query and can appear or vanish.
There is no reliable Search Console filter for AI Overviews as of 2026. Use query lists and spot checks. Keep a simple sheet of query, your rank, whether an overview shows, and who is cited.
How to get cited in AI Overviews
- Answer the exact question in the first paragraph. If the query is “what is pricing analytics”, start your page with one crisp definition.
- Match the wording in a heading. Use an h2 like “What is pricing analytics?” above the answer.
- Provide a short, factual summary, then details. Think two to four sentences up top, then sections that stand alone.
- Cover the obvious follow ups. If the query is “invoice export”, add “file formats”, “steps”, “limits”, “where to find it”.
- Use clear, sourceable statements. Avoid fluff. Link to a help page or a standard when relevant.
- Keep your title and URL aligned with the query. Example: yourproduct.com/guides/pricing-analytics with a title “Pricing analytics: definition and examples”.
- Make the page fast and readable. If it is slow or jumpy, users bounce and you lose trust. Aim for 2.5 seconds LCP and 0.1 CLS.
- Earn links from relevant sites. If the same content exists on many pages, authority helps selection.
A fixed page looks like: the question in the h1, a two sentence answer at the top, a steps section, and a short FAQ with precise claims.
Traps and controls
- Hiding content with nosnippet or data-nosnippet also limits your regular snippets. It can reduce clicks from classic results.
- Writing to please a model instead of a reader. Keep it verifiable and helpful to a human.
- Ignoring intent. If the query is transactional, a guide will not be cited. Build the right page type.
- Thin answers. A one line definition without detail is hard to cite over a fuller guide.
- Measuring the wrong thing. Expect impressions to rise, CTR to fall, and total clicks to depend on citation win rate.
Questions
No. There is no separate opt out. If your content is eligible for Search, it is eligible for citation. You can limit what text can be quoted with nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet, but those also affect normal snippets.
Search the query in a logged out browser for your target location. Open the overview and look at the cited links. If your page appears, click through to confirm the URL and note the wording the overview quoted.
In Search Console, watch queries where your average position stays similar but clicks or CTR drop. Cross check those queries in live search. If an overview shows above you and you are not cited, lower CTR is expected.
Win the underlying search first and answer plainly near the top of your page. Use the question in a heading and provide a short, verifiable summary. Overviews cite pages from Search results, so relevance and clarity matter.
They are different elements. An overview can appear on some queries where a featured snippet might also appear at other times. Plan to earn both by answering the question clearly and completely.
