The best SEO tools for a SaaS, by the job

Start with the truth: set up the free basics

Get your baseline before you shop. You will save a month.

  • Google Search Console shows queries, pages, impressions, clicks and positions. It also reports indexing, sitemaps, Core Web Vitals and enhancements. It is pre click.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools is free and adds backlinks, keyword research and IndexNow.
  • Google Analytics 4 is free and shows sessions, pages, events and conversions. It is post click. It never reconciles exactly with Search Console.
  • Use the Search Console Performance report to find “/pricing”, docs and templates already close to page one.

The SaaS jobs and the tool for each

Map a job to a tool, not a brand. Here are the common SaaS jobs.

  • Comparisons and alternatives pages. Use keyword research to pick terms: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Semrush Keyword Magic Tool, Moz Keyword Explorer, Mangools KWFinder. Check People also ask with AlsoAsked or AnswerThePublic. Confirm intent by reading the top results.
  • Integrations pages. Start with Search Console queries and autocomplete. Expand with Ahrefs, Semrush or KWFinder. Read a rival’s sitemap to spot missing vendors.
  • Pricing page. Use the Search Console Performance report to track brand plus “pricing”. Improve Core Web Vitals with PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse.
  • Docs and how-to content. Use Keyword Planner ranges, Search Console queries, KWFinder and Moz Keyword Explorer. Build FAQ schema with the Schema Markup Validator and test with the Rich Results Test.
  • Review sites and listings. Track brand queries in Search Console. Check backlinks with Ahrefs Site Explorer, Semrush Backlink Analytics or Moz Link Explorer. Use Majestic for Trust Flow and topical context.
  • AI answers and overviews. Track presence with Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Scrunch, or the AI toolkits in Semrush and Ahrefs. Also use a manual check: ask assistants your buyer questions on a schedule and log if you are cited.
  • Lead magnets and templates. Use Google Trends to gauge seasonality. Use SERP features checks in your suite to see if carousels or videos dominate.
  • Documentation UX. Crawl with Screaming Frog SEO Spider or Sitebulb to find orphan pages, thin content and incorrect canonicals. Fix titles near 60 characters and ensure one H1. Test changes with Search Console on a 28 day window.

Suites versus a focused report

A suite is a toolbox. A report is a plan. Choose based on how often you act.

  • Ahrefs is known for its backlink index and Site Explorer. It also has Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Content Explorer. It shows Domain Rating, a link based score from 0 to 100.
  • Semrush is a broad suite. It has Keyword Magic Tool, Position Tracking, Site Audit, Backlink Analytics and competitive research. It also has advertising and content modules. It shows Authority Score.
  • Moz Pro has Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, Site Crawl, Rank Tracking and an On Page Grader. It also has the free MozBar extension and long standing education. It shows Domain Authority from 0 to 100.
  • SE Ranking covers rank tracking, website audit, keyword and competitive research, backlinks and on page checks. It is often chosen as the affordable full suite.
  • Mangools suits beginners and small teams. KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler. Its link data comes from Majestic.
  • SpyFu focuses on competitor history in search and paid keywords. It is weaker on your own site’s audit.
  • Majestic runs its own link index. Trust Flow and Citation Flow from 0 to 100, a Topical Trust Flow by category. It is only for links.

If you act monthly, a suite makes sense. If you act once per quarter, a one off growth report may be faster to ship. We make Porteur, a bought once growth report written from your site, the searches and the rivals, with a free check first.

Crawling and fixing a product site

You need a crawler to find what Search Console will not tell you directly. Start with a desktop crawl, then fix and re test.

  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs. The licence unlocks unlimited crawls, custom extraction, scheduling and API connections. It produces tables you interpret yourself.
  • Sitebulb runs on Windows and macOS, with a cloud version. It is known for explained audit hints with priorities and visual crawl maps. It suits founders who want guidance in the UI.
  • Cloud crawlers like Lumar and Oncrawl exist for large sites.
  • Run a crawl after every docs restructure, a URL change or a new section. Check for duplicate titles, 404s, noindex, redirect chains, canonical errors and orphan pages.
  • Use the Detailed SEO extension to spot title, headings, canonical and robots at a glance while you fix pages.

Speed, Core Web Vitals and diagnostics

Do not guess speed. Test the exact slow pages users hit, like “/pricing” and “/signup”. Use field data first, then a lab run to debug.

  • PageSpeed Insights is free. It runs Lighthouse and shows Chrome UX Report field data if available.
  • Lighthouse runs in Chrome DevTools, the CLI and PageSpeed Insights. It is a lab test on a fixed device profile.
  • WebPageTest offers detailed waterfalls, filmstrips and many locations and devices. Free tests have limits.
  • GTmetrix is built on Lighthouse and adds waterfalls and test locations. Monitoring needs a paid plan.
  • Use the Web Vitals extension to watch LCP, CLS and INP while you browse.
  • Aim for LCP around 2.5 seconds, CLS around 0.1, INP around 200 ms. Fix fonts, images and third party scripts first.
  1. Pick pages

Run “/pricing”, “/guides/getting-started” and your top two landing pages from Search Console. These pages decide revenue.

  2. Run PSI

Check field data and note which metric fails. Only then open Lighthouse for a repeatable debug run.

  3. Fix one cause

Compress hero images, inline critical CSS or defer a heavy script. Re test. Move on to the next cause.

Keyword research that fits B2B SaaS

Pick topics buyers use. Avoid vanity head terms you will never own. Use free and paid sources together for confidence.

  • Use Search Console queries to find striking distance terms for pages you already have.
  • Use Ahrefs Keywords Explorer or Semrush Keyword Magic Tool to expand clusters around “alternatives”, “vs”, “integration”, “template” and “pricing”.
  • Use Moz Keyword Explorer or Mangools KWFinder for difficulty scores that new teams understand fast.
  • Use AlsoAsked to extract the question tree for a feature or problem. Feed these into an FAQ section or docs.
  • Use Google Keyword Planner for ranges, Google Trends for relative interest, and Keywords Everywhere for quick volumes on the results page.
  • Ubersuggest can give beginners keyword and content ideas with a free daily allowance.

AI visibility for your SaaS, as of 2026

Buyers now see AI answers before they click. Track if and how you appear, and write pages assistants can cite.

  • Use Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Scrunch, Semrush’s AI toolkit or Ahrefs Brand Radar to watch appearances and citations.
  • Keep a manual log. Every 28 days, ask the main assistants five buyer questions like “best [your category] for startups” and “how to migrate from [rival] to [you]”. Note if your brand or a page is cited.
  • Add clear comparison pages, migration guides and integration steps. Use FAQ schema where it helps. Test with the Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator.
  • Read the guides on how to rank in AI overviews and writing pages assistants can cite for a process.

Choosing tools: criteria that matter for small teams

Judge tools by the job, the data and your cadence. Here is a short list to keep you honest when you buy.

  • Job fit. Can it do the one job you need this month, like find link gaps or crawl 2,000 URLs well.
  • Data source. Suites use their own link and keyword datasets. Expect differences. Cross check with a second source for decisions that cost time.
  • Interpretation. Screaming Frog gives you raw tables. Sitebulb explains issues with priorities. Pick the style you will act on.
  • Setup time. Chrome extensions like Detailed SEO, MozBar and Keywords Everywhere speed up quick audits.
  • Exports and connectors. If you report in Looker Studio, check the connector availability for Search Console and GA4. Most other data you will export as CSV.
  • Learning curve. If you have one hour a week, use Search Console, a crawler you understand, and one suite you will open every week.
  • Overlap. Avoid buying two suites. Add a specialised tool like Majestic, SpyFu or a rank tracker instead.
