Free alternatives to Screaming Frog
Screaming Frog is free up to 500 URLs, and most product sites never reach that ceiling, so the first answer is usually to keep using it. If you have outgrown it, or you want something that runs without installing anything, there are three kinds of free alternative: another crawler, your own accounts, and single-purpose tools that answer one question at a time. This page says what each covers and where it stops.

What the free tier already covers
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler for Windows, macOS and Linux. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, and that is a full crawl of most product sites: every status code, title, description, heading, canonical, directive, redirect and internal link.
The licence is what unlocks unlimited crawls, custom extraction, scheduling and API connections. Nothing about the free tier is crippled for a small site; it is simply capped.
The criteria that decide it
- Scale: how many URLs you genuinely need crawled, after excluding parameters and filters.
- Installation: are you allowed to install software on this machine.
- Interpretation: do you want tables to read, or issues explained in an order.
- Ownership: is this your site, verified in your accounts, or someone else's.
- Frequency: once a quarter by hand, or something that runs on its own.
When 500 URLs is not enough
A crawl that blows through the cap on a site with two hundred real pages is telling you something before you upgrade anything.
Look at what is multiplying
Sort the crawled URLs and look for patterns: sort orders, filters, session parameters, calendar pages, tag archives, paginated lists.
Exclude the patterns and crawl again
A crawler lets you exclude URL patterns before the crawl. Excluding parameter combinations usually brings a small site back under the cap.
Decide what should be indexable
The exclusions you just wrote are the beginning of a robots and canonical policy. Facet combinations with no search demand do not deserve to be crawled by anyone.
Then, if it still overflows, pay
A site with thousands of pages that all deserve indexing has outgrown free tools. The licence costs less than the hours you will spend working around it.
The free alternatives, by kind
Three kinds, and they answer different questions.
- Another crawler. Sitebulb is a desktop crawler for Windows and macOS with a cloud version, known for explained audit hints with priorities and visual crawl maps. Its trial is the way to see whether explanations suit you better than tables; check its own site for current terms.
- Your own accounts. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified sites and includes Site Audit and Site Explorer on your own site. Bing Webmaster Tools is free and carries a site scan beside its keyword and backlink reports. Both crawl the site for you, without installing anything.
- Search Console itself. It does not crawl on demand, but it reports what Google's crawl found: the pages it indexed, the ones it refused and why, the redirects, the soft 404s and the Core Web Vitals of real visits. For a site owner this is the most useful crawl data that exists, and it is free.
Free tools that answer one question each
Half the reasons to run a crawl are a single question. Those do not need a crawler at all.
| The question | What answers it |
|---|---|
| Is this page indexable, and what does it say | A single-page on-page checker, or URL Inspection in Search Console |
| Where does this URL redirect, and how many hops | A redirect checker |
| Are there broken links on this page | A broken link checker |
| Is my sitemap valid and are its URLs alive | A sitemap checker |
| Does robots.txt allow this crawler on this path | A robots.txt tester |
| Is my structured data eligible for a rich result | The Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator |
| How fast is this page on a phone | PageSpeed Insights |
| Which pages have no internal links pointing at them | An internal link checker over a sample of the site |
We publish free tools for most of those questions on this site, and there are good ones elsewhere. They are not a substitute for a crawl of a whole site, and they are faster than one when you already know which page is wrong.
What each gives up
- Sitebulb: a desktop tool like the one you are replacing, so installation is still required, and its full use is paid.
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools: only your own verified sites, and the checks are theirs rather than yours to configure.
- Search Console: no crawl on demand, no custom fields, and it only knows what Google chose to fetch.
- Single-purpose tools: one page or one file at a time, so they find the fault you suspected rather than the one you did not.
- All of them: no custom extraction. Questions like "which pages still load the old script" are answered by a crawler with extraction, or by grep in your repository.
When paying is the right answer
- The site genuinely holds thousands of pages worth indexing.
- You crawl client sites, so the work is repeated and billable.
- You need scheduling, so a regression is caught without you remembering.
- You need custom extraction or API connections for a question nobody else checks.
- You are spending more hours working around the cap than the licence would cost.
Everything else is a small site pretending to be a large one. A founder with 120 pages, the free crawler tier, Search Console and a handful of single-purpose tools is not missing anything that would change their next month.
Side by side
Screaming Frog
screamingfrog.co.uk
Crawling a site from your own machine and laying out every technical fact as tables you filter and read.
Good at
- A complete crawl of a small site, free up to 500 URLs
- Control over what is crawled and how
- Crawling sites you do not own
- Custom extraction with a licence
- Running against staging and protected environments
Choose it when You want the whole picture of a site you can crawl in one sitting, and you are comfortable reading tables.
Not for Someone who cannot install software, or who wants findings ranked and explained.
Sitebulb
sitebulb.com
Desktop and cloud crawling with explained audit hints, priorities and visual crawl maps.
Good at
- Explaining why an issue matters, not just listing it
- Prioritised hints for people newer to technical work
- Visual maps of a site's structure
- Desktop and cloud versions of the same crawl
- Readable reports for a client or a colleague
Choose it when You want a crawler that teaches while it audits, and explanations are worth more to you than raw tables.
Not for A permanently free option, or crawling from a machine where you cannot install software.
Google Search Console
search.google.com/search-console
Reporting what Google's own crawl found on your verified site, and what it did with each URL.
Good at
- The indexing decision for every URL, with the reason
- Redirects, soft 404s and blocked pages as Google saw them
- Core Web Vitals from real visits
- The queries and clicks a crawler can never see
- Free, forever, on sites you own
Choose it when Always, beside whatever crawler you use. It is the only source of Google's own view of your site.
Not for Crawling on demand, custom fields, or any site you have not verified.
Porteur
porteur.ai
A growth report bought once, written from a crawl of the site, the searches around it, the rivals on them and, when connected, Search Console and product analytics.
Good at
- Turning technical facts into an ordered list of changes
- Reading the site beside the searches it should win
- A free check with no card and no install
- Findings written as briefs, with the figures behind them
- Nothing to renew
Choose it when You have the crawl data and still do not know which twenty of the two hundred findings are worth your month.
Not for Replacing a crawler you run yourself, custom extraction, or scheduled monitoring of a site.
Count your URLs first: under 500, the free crawler tier is the alternative, and nothing here beats it. Over it, exclude the parameter noise and crawl again before spending anything, because URL sprawl is a finding in its own right. If you cannot install software, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools crawl verified sites for free, and Search Console tells you what Google itself found, which no crawler can. Pay for a licence when the site is genuinely large, when you crawl for clients, or when you need scheduling and custom extraction; not because a crawl of 120 pages felt too easy.
Questions
The free version crawls up to 500 URLs with no time limit. A licence removes the cap and adds custom extraction, scheduling and API connections. For a small site the free tier is a permanent answer, not a trial.
For a site you own, the combination that costs nothing is the free crawler tier plus Search Console, with a free verified-site audit from Ahrefs Webmaster Tools or Bing Webmaster Tools when you want a second opinion. Each covers what the others miss.
With a desktop crawler, yes, within the free URL cap and at a polite crawl rate. Verified-account tools only work on sites you own. Crawl gently: a fast crawl of someone else's small server is rude and can look like an attack.
They answer different questions. Search Console reports what Google fetched and decided; a crawler shows what is on the site right now, including pages Google has never reached. Most technical work starts in Search Console and is confirmed with a crawl.
That your site generates more URLs than pages: parameters, filters, sort orders, tag archives or paginated lists. Exclude those patterns, crawl again, and then decide which of them should be crawlable and indexable at all.
Check my site, free
Paste your URL and the free check crawls your site the way a tool would, then names three findings worth your next hour, with the searches and rivals behind them.
