AI tool directories: where to list an AI product and what it does

You list in AI directories for discovery, not for links. The audience is on category pages and in assistants that cite them. Here is where to submit, what to write, and how to judge the paid options.

What AI tool directories do for you

They put you on category pages buyers already read. Those pages rank on best AI tool for X and similar. Assistants read and cite them.

Most links from directories are nofollow. That is fine. The value is the mention, the category placement, and the brand query you earn.

Expect referral spikes when you first list, then a long tail from your category page. Aim for fit and clarity over volume of listings.

Pick the two or three places your buyers read. For a dev tool, Dev Hunt and AlternativeTo. For a team SaaS, G2 or Capterra plus an AI directory. For a consumer app, an AI directory and a small launch site.

How their category pages rank and get cited

Search for best AI tool for meeting notes or x alternatives and you will see directory category pages. Assistants also cite these pages, as of 2026.

Your goal is to be on the right category page. If you build an AI summariser for call recordings, pick Transcription or Meeting notes, not Generic AI. That gets you read by buyers and assistants both.

A good listing earns clicks from the directory page even when your site does not yet rank. It also creates brand searches that you can see in Search Console later.

What to prepare before you submit

  • Name exactly as on your homepage and product UI
  • One-liner that says who it is for and the outcome: “Summarise Zoom calls into action items for sales teams”
  • Primary category and one secondary that your buyer would expect
  • Pricing, as a short line: “Free tier, Pro monthly, Business”
  • Three to five screenshots that show value, not just the hero image
  • One short video or GIF of the core flow, optional if the site has one
  • Key features as short phrases, not buzzwords
  • Use cases in the buyer’s words, two or three
  • Sign-in options if relevant: Google, email, SSO
  • Data handling basics if you can say it simply: “Records stay in the EU” or “No training on your data”
  • The model or approach if it helps the buyer: “Fine-tuned on support chats”
  • Contact link, and a support email you read
  • Social proof if you have it: a review, a number, or a case
  • A crisp square logo and a wide image for cards

Check you can onboard a cold visitor in one minute. If sign-up breaks, the listing will not save you. Fix the flow first, then submit.

How to submit on the big AI directories

Most AI directories have a Submit form. You add your site, one-liner, category, pricing, media, and links. Some review by hand, some publish fast. Paid options often skip the queue or feature you for a time.

  1. Futurepedia submit

Open the submit page. Fill the fields above. Pick a category that matches the searches your buyer would use. Upload clean screenshots. Expect a queue unless you pay to expedite.

  2. There’s An AI For That submission

Use the submission form. Keep the one-liner tight. Choose a use case that fits where you want to be found. Some edits may be made by their team to fit the page format.

  3. Toolify and AI Tool Guru

Create an account. Add your tool with the same assets. Check how they name categories and mirror that language in your listing so you appear in the right places.

  4. Smaller AI lists

Find “submit” on sites like AITopTools or similar. Reuse the same assets for speed. Watch out for pay-to-list sites with no traffic and skip them.

After you submit, set a reminder to check the live page. Fix typos, stale logos, and broken links. If they allow edits, keep the listing in sync with your current pricing and features.

Beyond AI-only: the listings that compound

Create a vendor profile on G2 and Capterra. A profile is free. Reviews from verified users are the currency. Their category pages rank on best X software and X reviews and are cited by assistants. Capterra belongs to Gartner Digital Markets with GetApp and Software Advice and one listing feeds the three.

Submit to AlternativeTo. Anyone can add an app. Users like apps and alternatives are ordered by likes. Their pages rank on X alternatives and are cited by assistants. Keep your description short and propose accurate alternatives to and from your app.

Use the small launch sites with real audiences: Uneed, MicroLaunch, Dev Hunt for developer tools, Launching Next, Peerlist launches, Fazier, and SaaSHub. Each lists you, lets users vote, and links to you. These pages keep sending a trickle of visitors for months.

Treat community launches with care. Hacker News Show HN is for something you made that people can try. The title starts with “Show HN:”, link to the thing itself, and post a first comment that explains what it is and why. Asking friends to upvote is a voting ring and is detected. New posts live in the new and show lists and reach the front page on votes and comments. Moderators run a second-chance pool that reposts good submissions that got missed. Traffic from the front page is large and brief, and the comments are candid.

Indie Hackers is a community of founders. Share numbers and lessons in the right place. Bare promotion is not welcome. You can create a product page and post a launch if you contribute beyond promotion.

On Reddit, read each subreddit’s rules. Many ban self-promotion outright. Some run weekly share threads, like r/SideProject, r/startups share threads, r/webdev Showoff Saturday, r/SaaS, r/indiehackers. Disclose who you are. Be an active helper for months, then post a launch in the allowed thread. Reddit threads rank in Google since 2024 and are read by AI assistants.

On Product Hunt, launches run on a day and are ranked by upvotes. Add a tagline, a description, images or a video, and a first comment. Asking directly for upvotes is against the guidelines. A launch gives a day of visitors and a listing that keeps ranking for your product's name.

If you are pre-launch with a signup page, try BetaList. It lists pre-launch and recently launched startups with a landing page that takes signups. Free submissions wait in a queue that can take weeks. Paid options can expedite. It wants early-stage products and a clear one-liner.

How to write a listing that gets clicks

Start with the outcome. Then say who it is for. Cut qualifiers and filler words. Use the category’s own language in your copy so it matches user intent.

Keep formatting plain. Short phrases. No claims you cannot back on your site. If a directory lets you add keywords, pick four that your buyer types, not brand names you do not own.

A two-week submission plan

  1. Day 1 to 2: assets

Draft your one-liner, long description, and features. Capture five screenshots that show value. Export a square logo and a wide banner.

  2. Day 3: AI directories

Submit to two AI directories that fit your category. Use the same assets. Note whether they have paid queue skips, but do not buy yet.

  3. Day 4: software reviews

Create your vendor profile on G2 and Capterra. Start a list of users you can ask to review later, following their rules.

  4. Day 5: alternatives

Submit to AlternativeTo with clean alternatives to and from your app. Add a short, clear description.

  5. Day 6: small launch sites

Post to one or two small launch sites like Uneed or Dev Hunt if you are a dev tool. Keep copy consistent.

  6. Day 7 to 9: community prep

Write a Show HN draft, or an Indie Hackers post that shares lessons and numbers. Read subreddit rules for a weekly share thread and plan a post.

  7. Day 10: decision on paid

If any directory category page ranks well for your keyword, test a one-week feature. Track clicks and signups.

  8. Day 11 to 14: measure and fix

Open Search Console in a week and watch for branded query impressions. Check referrers. Update any listing with typos or better screenshots.

How to measure impact on a small site

  • Search Console Performance report: look for your brand and for impressions where the page URL is on a directory domain
  • Analytics referrers: futurepedia.io, the directory domains, and Product Hunt will show as sources if they send traffic
  • Support inbox: you will see mentions like “found you on AlternativeTo” or a directory name
  • Conversion rate: compare directory referrals to your site average

Expect a day-long spike from a front page or feature, then a baseline from your category page. Ship small fixes that lift activation, not just more directory submissions.
