How Perplexity picks its sources, and how to become one

Perplexity searches for every question and cites the pages it trusts. You can earn those citations if your pages answer directly and you allow its crawlers. This guide shows how Perplexity picks sources and how to become one.

What Perplexity AI is and why it matters

Perplexity is an answer engine. It searches the web for every question, then writes a short answer with citations. It launched in December 2022 and is now a common referrer in analytics.

Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the work of being cited by assistants. Perplexity is one of the main targets, with ChatGPT search, Google AI surfaces, Claude and Copilot.

For a small site, one Perplexity citation on a buyer query can send qualified visits. It also counts as proof on other assistants that copy or echo lists.

How Perplexity finds and cites sources

Perplexity builds an index with PerplexityBot. It also fetches pages live with Perplexity-User when a user asks. It searches for every question, then composes an answer.

Answers show numbered inline citations and a sources list. Pro Search runs multi-step queries. Pages and Spaces package findings. The Comet browser arrived in 2025 and keeps the same citation model.

What gets picked: pages that answer the question in the first paragraphs, use clear headings, carry recent dates, and present lists or comparisons it can quote. Names must be consistent with how buyers search.

What Perplexity favours in a page

  • A direct answer in the first two paragraphs. For example, start /pricing with your plans and limits, not a story.
  • Headings that match questions. Use h2: Pricing, h2: FAQs, h2: Alternatives, not vague slogans.
  • Freshness. Show a visible date on guides, updated for 2026 when you change facts.
  • Lists and tables. A numbered setup guide, a feature table, a pros and cons list.
  • Clear names. Use your product name the same way across pages and metadata.
  • Figures it can quote. State limits, counts, integrations and supported regions in text.
  • Author and company info. A byline and an about page help trust.

A fixed page looks like /guides/getting-started starting with h1, a two sentence summary, then a numbered setup list, then a feature table, then FAQs with specific answers.

See which pages Perplexity cites on your queries

  1. List 15 buyer questions

Cover top tasks and comparisons. Example: “best OKR software for startups 2026”, “YourProduct alternatives”, “how to set up SSO in YourProduct”.

  2. Ask Perplexity each question

Run the default search. If needed, use Pro Search. Read the numbered citations and the sources panel.

  3. Log who is named

Record the domains and pages. Note which are lists and which are product docs. Keep a sheet by query.

  4. Open each cited page

Study structure, headings, and the phrasing Perplexity lifted. Copy the useful formats, not the wording.

  5. Repeat monthly

Track changes. When you ship a new page or update a guide, re-ask the closest question and log the result.

On a product query like “YourProduct pricing”, Perplexity may cite your /pricing and a comparison like /alternatives/YourProduct. On a how-to query, it often cites docs pages with steps and screenshots.

Robots.txt and crawler tokens you must allow

If you block the answering or search crawlers, you are invisible. Allow PerplexityBot for the index and Perplexity-User for on-demand fetches. Keep Bingbot and Googlebot open too.

Training tokens are separate. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and others control training use. They do not get you cited. Choose your stance per token.

Write and restructure pages Perplexity can cite

  1. Start with the answer

Open with two sentences that answer the query. Example on /alternatives/YourProduct: “Here are nine YourProduct alternatives for 2026. We compare pricing, SSO, and integrations.”

  2. Use headings that match searches

Make each h2 a search. Example: h2: YourProduct pricing, h2: YourProduct vs Competitor, h2: Is YourProduct free.

  3. Add a quotable list or table

Put a numbered list of steps on /guides/sso-setup. Add a table of features on /pricing. Keep labels plain English.

  4. State figures in text

Do not hide plan limits in images. Write “Plan A adds 3 seats and SSO” so assistants can lift it.

  5. Date and attribute

Show “Updated September 2026” and an author. Keep a change log on long guides.

  6. Link internally with exact names

From /pricing link to /guides/sso-setup with “SSO setup guide”. Use the same names a buyer uses.

A before: /pricing opens with a banner and a video, the plans are hidden behind tabs, and limits sit in images. An after: four plans in an HTML table under h2: Pricing, with footnotes in text and a short FAQ below.

Get on the lists and comparisons Perplexity already cites

Perplexity often cites roundups when a buyer asks for options. Your name on those pages is a shortcut to mentions. There is no submission form inside Perplexity.

  • Find the top five cited lists for your head term. For “OKR software”, look at /best-okr-tools pages that Perplexity names.
  • Pitch the editors with a short note and facts it can quote. Name your plans, integrations, and what you do better in one paragraph.
  • Ship your own comparison pages. Example: /alternatives/Competitor with a features table and clear trade-offs.
  • Keep product directories up to date. YourProduct on G2, Capterra and AlternativeTo helps your name appear in third-party lists.
  • When you join a list, mirror the same phrasing on your site so assistants match the name.

A fixed page looks like /alternatives/Competitor with a summary paragraph, then a side-by-side table, then three use cases, then FAQs about switching.

Perplexity’s publisher programme, and what it means

Perplexity runs a publisher programme with revenue sharing since 2024. It pays participating publishers when their content is used in answers.

You do not need to join the programme to be cited. Citations follow the index and the answer. The programme affects monetisation, not selection, as of 2026.

If you run a content site with ad inventory, evaluate it. If you run a SaaS or a store, focus on being cited on buyer queries first. Then revisit monetisation later.

A monthly GEO routine for Perplexity and peers

  1. Track citations

Once a month, ask your 15 buyer questions on Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Claude, Google AI Mode and Copilot. Log who is named.

  2. Segment assistant traffic

In analytics, create segments for referrers: perplexity.ai, chatgpt.com, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com. Google AI clicks arrive as google.com.

  3. Fix one page per week

Pick a page that should be cited but is not. Add the direct answer, headings, lists, a visible date, and internal links.

  4. Join two lists per quarter

Pitch two cited roundups with your facts. Mirror the phrasing on your site. Track if your name appears in new answers.

  5. Review robots and speed

Keep answering bots allowed. Improve Core Web Vitals. Slow pages and heavy scripts can hide content and reduce crawl success.

  6. Use tracking tools sparingly

Tools like Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Scrunch, and the AI toolkits of Semrush and Ahrefs can automate checks. Sample by hand to validate.

A simple sheet works. Columns: Query, Assistant, Cited pages, Your page present, Notes, Next change. Keep a running log of before and after content for each fix.

Troubleshooting: why you are not cited yet

  • Robots blocked. Check robots.txt for PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot.
  • No direct answer. Your /guides or /pricing do not state the answer in the first paragraphs.
  • Hidden content. Key text appears only after JavaScript runs. Assistants often cannot read it after load.
  • Old content. Your guide is dated 2023. Update facts and add “Updated September 2026”.
  • Inconsistent names. You use “Your Product”, “YourProduct” and “YP”. Pick one and use it everywhere.
  • Not on lists. The roundups Perplexity cites do not name you. Pitch them, and build your /alternatives pages.
  • Thin comparisons. Your /alternatives/Competitor is a sales pitch, not a table with trade-offs and limits.

Fix order: open robots, state the answer, make content visible without scripts, update dates and figures, align names, add tables and lists, then pursue listings.
