SERP

A SERP is a search engine results page, the page a search engine returns for a query. You compete on it for attention, not just for rank one. Read the features to see what searchers want and shape your page to match.

The page and its parts as of 2026

A SERP has three broad parts: paid results marked Sponsored, the organic results, and features.

  • Organic results: the classic ten blue links when no feature crowds them. Often fewer when features appear.
  • Features: AI Overviews and AI Mode, a featured snippet, People also ask, knowledge panels, sitelinks, image, video and news packs, the local pack with a map, shopping results, and Discussions and forums.

Position 1 means the first organic result. In Search Console, a feature counts as a position when it carries a link to your site.

The set of features on a query signals intent. A local pack means local need. Shopping means product choice. A featured snippet means a direct answer exists.

Why it matters for a small site

Features change where clicks go. You might rank third and get fewer clicks than a forum thread or a snippet above you.

You win by matching the SERP, not by repeating a keyword. If a query shows video and forums, a 2,000 word how to without visuals will stall.

Work page by page. For "/pricing" on yourproduct.com, target brand and comparison queries. For "/guides/getting-started", target a clear how to with steps and images.

How to read a SERP quickly

  1. Search your target query in an incognito window

Use your market location. Note if an AI Overview or AI Mode appears, and if sources are linked.

  2. List the visible blocks top to bottom

Write: Ads, snippet, People also ask, local pack, shopping, images, videos, news, forums, organic links.

  3. Mark what ranks before the first organic result

If three blocks sit above it, your page must beat them in utility or target a different angle.

  4. Click the top formats shown

Open the featured snippet, a top video, and a forum thread. Note structure, headings, media, and the question they answer.

  5. Decide fit and format

If the SERP is comparison heavy, write a comparison. If local pack dominates, make or improve your Google Business Profile.

A fixed page reflects the winning format. Example: for “what is a webhook”, a tight definition in the first line, a diagram, and a worked example with a cURL request.

Measuring positions and features

Use Search Console. Open Performance. Filter by page or query. Read impressions, clicks, click through rate, and average position.

Remember: features count as positions when they include your link. A featured snippet click will show with that position. An AI Overview citation with your link also can show.

  • Check Rich results and Search appearance tabs if available for your property. They group clicks from features.
  • Map SERP features to your page templates: guides for snippets and People also ask, product pages for shopping, location pages for local pack.
  • Track brand queries separately from generics. A knowledge panel or sitelinks often reshape brand clicks.

What to do on common SERP types

  • Direct answer SERP with a featured snippet: open with the definition in one sentence, then a short list. Add a labelled image. Mark up with clear headings.
  • People also ask heavy: add a concise FAQ with the exact questions. Link to fuller answers. Use plain language.
  • Local pack: create or improve your Google Business Profile. Add NAP details on your contact page. Build a location page with hours and reviews.
  • Shopping results: add structured data for Product. Show price, availability, and shipping on the page. Include comparison content if the SERP shows it.
  • Image or video packs: add compressed images with descriptive alt text. Consider a short video with chapters. Put the media near the answer.
  • Discussions and forums: add a real world troubleshooting section. Quote user language. Link to your community thread if you have one.
  • AI Overview present: cover the core question clearly, cite trustworthy sources, and include step by step instructions that can be summarised.
