Microsoft Copilot cites from Bing: the way in is Bing Webmaster Tools

Copilot cites from Bing. If Bing cannot see you, Copilot will not name you. Here is the setup and the page tweaks that get you into Copilot answers.

Why Bing decides who Copilot cites

Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing’s index. Bingbot crawls your pages. Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow are your way in. If Bing does not index you, Copilot cannot cite you.

DuckDuckGo’s assistant and part of other assistants also use Bing’s index. So missing Bing means you miss more than Copilot. Fix Bing first, then refine content.

Generative engine optimisation, in short

Generative engine optimisation is getting named and cited in AI answers across Copilot, ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Claude and Gemini. The term was popularised by a 2023 paper by Aggarwal and colleagues. The practical work is the same pattern across them: be in the index they use, state answers early and clearly, be on the lists they already cite, and let their answering crawlers in robots.txt.

Set up Bing Webmaster Tools fast

Your aim is to get your site verified, your sitemap read, and crawl errors fixed. Ten minutes if you have Google Search Console set up already.

  1. Import from Search Console

Go to Bing Webmaster Tools, add your site and choose Import. Sign in with the same Google account you use for Search Console. Pick the property and confirm. This pulls in your verified ownership and sitemaps.

  2. If you cannot import, verify another way

Add the TXT record to DNS or upload the HTML verification file to the web root. Then click Verify.

  3. Submit or confirm your XML sitemap

In Sitemaps, add https://yourproduct.com/sitemap.xml. If you run a blog and docs, include those sitemaps too. Keep it updated automatically.

  4. Check URL inspection and crawl issues

Pick a key URL like https://yourproduct.com/guides/getting-started. Inspect it. If Bing says Discovered but not crawled or Crawled but not indexed, fix why, then request a recrawl.

  5. Fix obvious blocks

Open robots.txt at https://yourproduct.com/robots.txt. It must not Disallow Bingbot. Remove noindex tags from pages you want Copilot to cite, like /guides/pricing-comparison.

A fixed site shows green checks for verification and sitemaps, key pages listed as Indexed, and Bingbot fetching new URLs within a day of publish once IndexNow is live. More on IndexNow next.

Add IndexNow for fresh pages Copilot can see

IndexNow notifies Bing each time you publish, update or delete a URL. It reduces the wait between a release and a Bing crawl. That shortens the lag to Copilot citing your new page.

  1. Create your IndexNow key

Generate a key and host it at https://yourproduct.com/yourkey.txt as the protocol requires. Keep the key stable.

  2. Wire your CMS or deploy hook

On publish, send the URL and key to the IndexNow endpoint. Many site platforms and plugins support this. If you ship static, add a build step that pings IndexNow for changed URLs.

  3. Send updates and deletes too

Trigger on edits and removals. Copilot credits fresher pages. Clearing out dead URLs also prevents 404s in citations.

You should see Bingbot fetch updated URLs soon after each ping. Check your server logs, or watch the Crawl Control and Crawl Stats in Bing Webmaster Tools for activity within the day.

Let answering crawlers in, block training if you want

Assistants cite from their search crawlers. Blocking those makes you invisible. You can still restrict model training crawlers if you choose. Use robots.txt to set this line by line.

CrawlerUsed forAllow if you want citations?
BingbotBing Search and CopilotYes
GooglebotGoogle Search and AI Overviews citationsYes
OAI-SearchBotChatGPT search indexYes
Claude-SearchBotClaude search indexYes
PerplexityBotPerplexity indexYes

Also allow the on-demand fetchers like ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and Perplexity-User. They load the exact page a user asks about. Blocking them breaks answers that try to quote you.

What Copilot favours on your pages

Copilot lifts citations that answer the query directly in Bing’s index. It prefers pages with the answer early, clear structure, consistent naming, visible dates, and authors. It will name products that appear on the lists and comparisons it already fetches.

  • Start with the answer. If the query is “best invoicing app for freelancers”, start /guides/best-invoicing-apps with the shortlist in the first paragraph.
  • Match headings to questions. Use h2s like “Pricing for freelancers” and “What features matter”.
  • Use lists and tables it can quote. A three-row table that compares Starter, Pro and Business helps Copilot lift facts.
  • Name your product and competitors consistently. Use the same brand and model names on /pricing, /features and /compare/yourproduct-vs-x.
  • Show dates and who wrote it. Keep it recent and visible at the top.
  • Link to your comparison and roundup pages. Bring /compare pages and /guides roundups into the crawl path from /guides/ and /pricing.

A fixed article looks like this: /guides/getting-started opens with two lines that answer the task, shows an updated date, has h2s that mirror common questions, and a two-column table with plan limits Copilot can quote without guessing.

Earn mentions via existing lists and roundups

There is no submission form for Copilot citations. It cites what Bing already ranks, and what those pages name. The reliable route is to appear on comparison and roundup pages that Copilot already quotes.

  1. Find the pages Copilot quotes now

Ask Copilot buyer queries like “alternatives to YourProduct” and “best [your category] for [your niche]”. Log every cited page and brand.

  2. Get listed on those pages

Reach out with a factual blurb, your /pricing and /features links, and a press kit. Offer a free account if they test tools.

  3. Publish your own clean comparisons

Create /compare/yourproduct-vs-x pages that define the differences plainly in the first paragraph. Add a small features table and exact plan names.

Once you appear on a few of those lists, assistants have more reasons to name you. Copilot sees that consensus through Bing’s index and brings your name into answers more often.

See Copilot traffic and measure citations

There is no official report of where your site was cited, as of 2026. You have three ways to measure: ask and log, read referrers, and use tracking products that automate the asking.

  • Ask assistants a fixed set of buyer questions each week. Record the named sources and links. Do it for Copilot, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Mode.
  • Segment analytics by referrer. Look for copilot.microsoft.com. chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com appear as distinct referrers. Google’s AI surfaces arrive as google.com together with web search.
  • Use tracking products. Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Scrunch, the AI toolkits of Semrush and Ahrefs, and DataForSEO’s LLM mentions data can run the questions and log mentions for you.

Set a dashboard with the weekly share of named sources in each assistant for your category. Add a chart of sessions by Copilot referrer. This shows when a new page starts to win citations.

Troubleshoot: visible in Bing but still not cited

If Bing indexes you but Copilot still skips you, the content usually misses the question or lacks structure. Or rivals are on the roundup pages Copilot already trusts and you are not. Fix the pages and the coverage, not the crawl.

  • Rewrite the first two paragraphs to answer the main query in plain words.
  • Add a small list or table with the facts Copilot can quote: price points, limits, supported platforms.
  • Add the author and a date near the title. Update stale posts.
  • Consolidate duplicates. If you have two “YourProduct vs X” pages, keep one and redirect the other.
  • Add internal links from /pricing and /features to your /compare and /guides pages so Bingbot reaches them often.
  • Pursue inclusion on third party roundups cited by Copilot. Your brand needs to be present there to enter the answer set.

Recheck with Copilot after edits. If you still do not appear, search Bing for the same query. If you are not in the top results or on the pages they cite, keep improving until you are named there.

What about ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google and Claude

Each assistant has its own index and crawler rules. The on-page patterns stay the same: answer first, structure clearly, show dates and authors, be on existing lists. Allow their answering crawlers. Do not rely on JavaScript for core content. Many crawlers do not execute scripts.

  • ChatGPT search uses a mix of partners including Bing and its own OAI-SearchBot. It shows inline citations and a Sources panel. It does not run JavaScript, so server render your key content.
  • Perplexity searches for every question, builds an index with PerplexityBot and prefers pages that answer in the first paragraphs with clear headings and recent dates.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cite from Google’s index. Clicks arrive as google.com in Search Console together with web search.
  • Claude search uses Claude-SearchBot and is reported to build on Brave Search’s index. It shows inline citations with links.
  • Gemini apps use Google Search for grounding when they search. Google-Extended controls training and grounding in Gemini apps, not Google Search.
